    3-D HDTV

    • Standard 2-D television displays the height and width of the images created on the screen. An HDTV with the 3-D feature adds the illusion of depth. To create this effect, a 3-D signal source sends two images to the screen. The viewer wears special glasses with a different lens in each side to filter the images and present one to each eye, causing the brain to perceive it as depth. The concept originally appeared in movies in the 1950s.

    LG Products

    • The LG company, founded as GoldStar in Korea in 1958, began producing radios, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners in 1960. In 1998, the company changed its name to LG and acquired the United States-based company, Zenith. In 2004, LG commercialized the world's first 55-inch LCD TV and the first 71-inch plasma TV. LG has become a major worldwide producer of TV sets. The company maintains a website to advertise its current 3-D models.

    3-D Sources

Because of the high volume of information needed to produce two simultaneous video signals, standard and high-definition TV broadcast stations, DVD players and VCRs don't produce 3-D signals. At time of publication, sources that produce 3-D include Blu-ray players and video game consoles, but only on high-end models that incorporate the feature. Some cable and satellite companies provide receivers that support 3-D technology and include channels with 3-D options in their premium programming packages or pay-per-view movie channels.

    3-D Connection

    • Connecting to an LG 3-D HDTV from any signal source requires a High-Definition Multimedia Interface connection. The cable, which also carries up to eight channels of audio and various control signals, comes in two basic categories: standard and high-speed; but each also has an option for an Ethernet channel. A 3-D signal requires the high-speed version, and the Ethernet option provides Internet support to any device in your system connected with HDMI, using a single computer connection to the system. You don't need the Ethernet option for 3-D signals.
