How to Convert Floor Tile Measurements

104 167
    • 1). Multiply the length and width of each section of floor together. This will give you the amount of square inches of tile needed to cover the space exactly. For example, a room measuring 77 by 84 inches will need 6,468 square inches of tile.

    • 2). Divide the square inches by 144, the number of square inches in a square foot, to get the number of square feet required. Round up to the nearest foot. In the example, 6,468 square inches of tile yield 45 square feet of tile.

    • 3). Add in an additional amount of tile to make up for breakage, cuts and waste. For tiles being laid straight, add 5 to 10 percent extra to the total. For specialty tiles like slate or glass, and for tile patterns such as the diagonal pattern, add 15 to 20 percent extra for waste.
A 45-square-foot room with tiles being laid straight will need approximately 50 square feet of tile, while the same size room with tiles being laid on the diagonal will need 54 square feet.
