Honey"s Sit N" Eat South

106 155
Bottom Line

Though the ambiance is lacking some of the rustic charm of the original location, the food is as good if not better. Honey's already successful signature brand of comfort brunch has been stepped up a notch. The new location at 21st and South is a much needed addition to daytime dining in Graduate Hospital.

Guide Review

Rumors of a new Honey's Sit N' Eat have been circulating for almost three years. The project was signed in June 2010 and Graduate Hospital residents have been anxiously awaiting it's opening. The original Honey's Sit N' Eat at 4th and Brown in Northern Liberties is a staple of the neighborhood; serving homestyle brunch 7-days-a-week. The restaurant stays surprisingly busy during the weekdays and impossibly crowded on weekends. In Graduate Hospital there are is a high demand for brunch and lunch dining and not many options. There are a number of coffee shops like LaVa, with the usual fare of bagels and paninis. There is the excellent but tiny, Ant's Pants, which is typically bursting at the seams.

In February of 2013 the new Honey's finally opened it's doors at 21st and South. Unlike the original location which is in a rustic old building with a farmhouse feel, the new Honey's is clean, boxy new construction. But the owners did there best to make it feel as worn in and rustic.

The corner space has windows on two sides so you can tell that it's a restaurant, but there is no sign yet outside. The decor is a hodgepodge of old stuff. The first thing you see is an iron steam powered saw that was somewhat awkwardly repurposed into a hosts stand. Old metal signs advertising long defunct industries hang from conspicuously exposed beams. There is a 50's diner style counter top with red pleather bar stools and cakes in glass trays. On the wall there are crates serve as shelves.

It was Tuesday afternoon and the new restaurant was full but not crowded. We were greeted warmly and sat right away. The menu looked familiar with Honey's signature brand of comfort food with Jewish and Southern influences. Our server who was very sweet but a little hapless offered was vague when wee asked for elaboration on the Special's board. It was forgivable since the restaurant is still so new. We went ahead and ordered the Brisket special which heavily marinated in lime and served with homemade "fritos," red onions, beans and rice and was in fact "very good and pretty big." We also got the Toad in the Hole which was challah soaked with hollandaise and seasoned with truffle oil topped with a poached egg and micro greens. This is a dish that should be on every brunch menu. It was perfect. We finished the meal off with a big homemade chocolate chip cookie. It was an excellent, satisfying meal. I expect Honey's South to be every bit as successful as it's predecessor.
