How to Choose the Right Amplifier for Subwoofers
- 1). Find out the resistance of your subwoofer. This is expressed in ohms and should be printed on the magnet of the subwoofer. Two- and four-ohm ratings are the most common. If the figure is not printed on the subwoofer's magnet, consult the sub's specs in the manual or check the manufacturer's website.
- 2). Find out the RMS power rating of your subwoofer. It's best to consult the manual for this specification, since promotional peak power figures are often printed on the sub itself. RMS power ratings indicate the constant power handling of the sub, which is a more useful figure.
- 3). Find an amplifier that will produce an RMS power output equal to the RMS power rating of the subwoofer, at the impedance of the subwoofer. For example, match a subwoofer with a 4-ohm resistance and RMS power handling of 200 watts with an amplifier that produces 200 watts to a 4-ohm load.
