Wireless Motorcycle Helmet Communication

104 23

    Types

    • The types of helmet systems range from a wireless CB radio system to high tech bluetooth technology. Family Radio Service (FRS) and the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), also used for walkie talkies, is used as well, but only works up to short distances. FM units are similar, using regular FM radio frequencies.

    Considerations

    • If you are just looking for a way to talk to your passenger without shouting, a GMRS, FM or FRS system will do just fine. Popular manufacturers include Vega, Midland, Scala and Whistler. Bluetooth offers the best options for longer distances and pack riding and are quite reliable, while good old CB units are user friendly and fun.

    Safety Issues

    • While wireless in helmet communication devices can enhance safety by letting you warn your riding buddies of upcoming obstacles, they can be dangerous. Use wisely, especially during rough riding conditions such as rain when distractions must be minimal. Make sure that you let your partners know if the chatter is making it hard to drive. These should only be used by experienced riders, as new riders can't usually handle the added distraction.
