How to Level an Interior Door Jamb
- 1). Remove any molding covering the jamb.
- 2). Hold a level against each side of the jamb to see which sides need adjustment.
- 3). Tap shims between the jamb and the door frame at the points that the level indicates are not plumb, or for an overall adjustment insert the shims at 12-inch intervals.
- 4). Continue to tap in the shims until the level indicates that the jamb is plumb. Make sure the jamb does not bow. Open and close the door to see if it easily moves through all swing positions.
- 5). Hammer in 12d nails through the wall framing, shim and door jamb.
- 6). Saw off the protruding portions of the shims, when the jamb is fully secured, so that the ends of the shims line up with the wall surface. If needed, add a jamb extension to build out the jamb.
- 7). Remount the molding as it was before, overlapping the jamb and wall surface seam.
