How Do I Remove Dry Grout from Tile?
- 1). Scrape up as much of the dried grout as possible using a floor scraper. For tiles that are easily scratched, use a small piece of wood with a sharp corner. Push the scraper into and under the grout away from you in short thrusts. Bring up the larger clumps of grout in this manner, and as much of the thinner patches as possible.
- 2). Pour water on the tiles. Use a nylon scouring pad to clean the thin layer of grout and haze from the tiles. Work the pad in a circular motion over the grout, pressing down firmly on the pad. Rinse the pad and the tiles frequently. Change the pad when it begins to clog up with grout.
- 3). Rinse and wipe the tiles to determine how much grout or haze is left. Dissolve a cup of sugar into a gallon of warm water and pour this over any stubborn or remaining grout and haze. Keep it there for up to two hours. Rinse with clean water and dry.
- 4). Use a scouring pad again on the grout that has been softened by the sugar. Work the pad in circles until all the grout and haze has been removed.
