How to Setup a Brochure in InDesign
- 1). Launch Adobe InDesign CS5. Choose "Document" from the "New" fly-out of the "File" menu.
- 2). Set your "Page Size" by selecting a prefabricated paper size or typing in "Width" and "Height." If you're creating a folded piece that's stitched at the fold line, set your page size to the folded size of your document. For example, if your flat, opened document's dimensions equal those of letter-sized paper, set your page size to half the width and the full sheet height. Otherwise, if your document simply folds up like an accordion or folds out in a rollout fold, set your "Page Size" to the flat size of your brochure. Make sure you specify your "Orientation" as either portrait -- narrower width than height -- or landscape.
- 3). Enter a "Start Page #" to determine the number of your opening page. Set your document to "Facing Pages" mode if you're creating folded piece, either stitched or perfect bound. Remember that entering an even number as your starting page number forces facing-page documents to start with a two-page spread.
- 4). Set "Margins," "Columns" and "Gutter" so your default pages will carry the basic guide settings you need for production. Within the margins that define the live area of your pages, columns divide your working space and the gutter margin defines the distance between columns. Add a "Master Text Frame" that fits within the margin and column settings you specify and appears on your default master page.
- 5). Add a "Bleed" if you know your brochure will include items that print all the way to the cut edge of the page. Unless your printing company specifies otherwise, typical bleed settings equal 1/8-in. or 9 points. Add a "Slug" area outside the printing dimensions of your document to incorporate printer's marks and color bars, job data and notes.
- 6). Specify the "Number of Pages" for your document. Click on the "OK" button to accept your document settings and create your new file.
