How to Install an Internal Modem Without a Disk
- 1). Remove the screws on the right panel of the tower. Open the case and lay flat on the floor. You should be able to see inside the tower.
- 2). Remove your internal modem. Detach the screw holding it in place. This device has two telephone jacks. If you do not have your modem inside the case yet, skip this step.
- 3). Look at the internal modem. On the circuit board side, you'll see a manufacturer's name and/or model number. If there are several numbers or names, write down all of the information.
- 4). Insert your internal modem into the "PCI" port. The motherboard may have two to six of these slots. They are cream color ports. The connection tab on the internal modem fits directly inside the "PCI" port. Line up the tab on the modem with the port. Push it in; it may click or snap into place. Screw the internal modem into the case to keep it in place.
- 5). Screw the panel onto the tower. Plug in all the necessary cords and turn on your PC.
- 6). Find an Internet connection. You must have an Internet connection to download the internal modem drivers. If your PC only has this modem, go to a friend's house or the library to download the specific drivers. You cannot get onto the Internet if you do not have a working modem.
- 7). Log on to a computer driver website. Computer Hope, Driver Guide or PC Drivers allow you to search for the manufacturer and model, then download from the website (see Resources below). You can also receive internal modem drivers from the manufacturer's website.
- 8). Download the driver and burn to disk. Put the driver disk in your computer. Unzip the driver then click on the ".exe" file. If the driver is only an ".exe" file, click on it. The driver will automatically install. Reboot your computer.
