How to Set Up a Sony Media Player SMP-N100 to Use a Wireless Connection

The Sony Media Player, SMP-N100, can connect wirelessly to a home wifi network.  Unlike other network media players, the Sony Media Player's initial "Easy Setup" does not include a step to connect your player to your wireless home network router.

This step-by-step will help you set up your Sony Media Player's wireless network connection.

Follow the Easy Setup Instructions to Completion

"Easy Setup" will automatically appear the first time you turn on the Sony Media Player.

Follow the onscreen instructions to set the language. Next, choose the type of video cable you used to connect to the Sony Media Player to your TV or home theater receiver. The player will determine the TV's resolution for the best quality picture.

Continue following the onscreen instructions until the Sony Xross menu home screen appears.

Proceed to the next step...

Navigate to Network Settings

The Sony Media Player streams your movies, music and photos from media libraries on your home network and from online content — Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon On Demand, Qriocity, Pandora.

But first, your Sony Media Player must be connected to your home network.

Navigate to the left to the toolbox icon.  Then press the "down" button so a box appears around "Network Settings."  Press enter on the remote control.

Proceed to the next step...

Navigate to Internet Settings Submenu

A list of submenus should appear to the right of the "Network Settings" submenu.

Navigate right and highlight "Internet Settings."

Press enter on the remote control.

This will begin the process of connecting to your home network.

Proceed to the next step...

Choose Wireless Setup

Choose "Wireless Setup" from the Internet Settings list.

Press the right navigation button on the remote control.

Proceed to the next step...

Scan to Find Your WiFi Network

If your router has a "push to connect" button or other wireless protected setup (WPS) button, choose the "Wi-fi Protected Setup (WPS)" item and skip to Page 10.

Otherwise choose "Scan" to let the Sony Media Player search for your wi-fi home network.

Proceed to the next step...

Choose Your Home Network

A list of available wifi networks will appear. If you live in an apartment building or even in a house, you may see your neighbors' networks along with your own.

Choose your network and press the right navigation arrow.

Proceed to the next step...

Enter Your Wireless Network's Password

If you have protected your wireless network with a password (WPA key), press enter.

An input for letters and numbers appears onscreen.  Type in the password using the number keys on your remote, similar to typing in a text on a phone — press the number until the letter appears and move on to the next.

Alternatively, you can navigate to the letters or numbers onscreen.

If you make a mistake, press the red button on the remote to backspace and erase.

When you have finished entering your WPA key, press the green button on the remote.

Proceed to the next step...

After Entering the WPA Key, Press the Right Arrow Button

This will bring you back to the WPA key screen.  It may look the same as it did before you entered the WPA key.  If you pressed the green button, the password should be saved and you can go to the next step.

Do not press enter.  Instead, press the right navigation arrow to go to the next screen.  Skip to page 12.

Proceed to the next step...

Press the WPS Button on Your Router

If your router has a push-to-connect security button, choose "Wi-fi Protected Setup (WPS)" at the wireless setup screen.

Press the right navigation button.

Proceed to the next step...

The Sony Media Player Will Automatically Obtain an IP Address

When ready, press "enter" to start the connection process.

It will instruct you to press the button on your router.

Once you highlight "start" and press enter, you have two minutes to press the button on your router.

Proceed to the next step...

Test the Connection and Next Steps

This screen gives you the option of customizing your IP address.  A router will automatically assign an IP address to the media player.

Unless you are an advanced user, choose "auto."

Press the right navigation button on your remote to move to the next screen.

Proceed to the next step...

Once you have successfully connected to your home network, select OK and press enter. You will return to the Xross home menu.

Now you will need to load the included online services onto your Sony Media Player.
