How to Protect Your Artwork During Fumigation

104 36
    • 1). Consult with the fumigator on the chemicals to be used, to determine if they will be detrimental to artwork or other valuables. Keep in mind that while your house will be tented and marked as being under fumigation, it still may be open to thieves, so you may wish to remove valuables prior to fumigation. Determine which pieces of artwork, if any, will stay in the house during fumigation.

    • 2). Make an inventory of each piece of artwork you are removing and where it is in the house, to ensure you do not forget an item or where it should be replaced after fumigation.

    • 3). Remove the artwork from the house and store it in a secure storage unit or a friend's or relative's home. For further protection, wrap your artwork tightly in heavy plastic sheeting or cloth sheets. Seal them with tape, and make them as airtight as possible.

    • 4). Wait until the chemicals have dissipated, based on guidance from the fumigation professionals working on your house. Once you enter the house, open the windows to air out the house and get out any remaining fumes.

    • 5). Bring the artwork back to the house. Unwrap the artwork, and put it back where it was, using the inventory you made as a guide.
