5 Tips Guaranteed to Boost Your Mood

It's that time of year again - Winter! A time when gloom descends on many people like an awful shroud that can sometimes hang around right through until Spring. So I thought it might be a good idea to give you some tips on how you can boost your mood and banish the gloom this Winter! And the really great thing is that it will work any time of the year.

Here we go!

1. Detox your mind. Many people detox their body right after the new year as part of their resolution to improve their health and vitality, but few people think of detoxing their mind. How do you do it? Simple. Just begin to become aware of your thoughts. You think certain thoughts every day as a habit. Some of these will be good and some will be downright awful. Take stock of these thoughts. Throw out the unhelpful ones and replace them with positive thoughts.

2. Don't worry. There's a great quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer on this: "It makes no sense to worry about things you have no control over because there's nothing you can do about them, and why worry about things you do control? The activity of worrying keeps you immobilized." Stop thinking about the things you are afraid might happen and start thinking about what you want to happen. What do you want to achieve this year? What long term and short term goals do you have?

3. Use your body. Your physiology has a tremendous impact on your mood. This might sound a bit odd, but I want you to try it: Stand up and take a few deep breaths and put a big silly grin on your face. Hold your head up high and proud, like you feel invincible. Make a fist now with your right hand, punch the air as if in victory and shout, "Yes!" Do that several times, all the while keeping the big grin. I guarantee you will feel better. Don't worry about looking silly. No one will see you, and I won't tell!

4. Get away from negative people. You know, there are some people that would complain if they won a hundred million dollars on the lottery. They'd just find a reason, or a whole set of reasons to complain and moan! It's just what they do best. But you don't want such people around you, trying to bring you down. Don't let that happen! If you're in the company of someone who is spouting negativity, politely excuse yourself and get some fresh air.

5. Mind your tongue. You need to do a detox on what you say as well as what you think. When someone asks you how you are, don't say, "Oh, I'm not too bad, I guess." Instead, say, "I'm great today, how are you?" Or if your boss heaps a big task on you at work, don't say, "Oh boy, how am I ever going to get this done?" Instead, say, "This is a big challenge, but I'm more than equal to it, and I'll feel great satisfaction when it's done."

Staying positive is easy if you continually monitor what you're thinking, saying and doing. And here's just one more bonus tip to improve your mood: Help another person in some way. Do a favor for a friend, buy some groceries for an elderly neighbor, pay for the person behind you at the toll booth - it doesn't matter what it is as long as it's helpful to someone else. This will make you feel absolutely fantastic!
