Do it Yourself Blown Insulation

    Measure and Calculate

    • Measure the area to be insulated. This is a process that is generally overlooked. You will need to know the approximate measurements in order to select your insulating product. Use a 100-foot tape measure--some other tape measures will reach only 20 or 30 feet--and keep a pad and pencil handy for recording notes and numbers. Always measure twice.

    Prepare Yourself

    • Wear a long-sleeved shirt, protective eyewear, and a dust mask. The recycled newspaper will create much dust as it is blown out. These protections will prevent any irritations to the body.

    Blow the Insulation

    • Have a helper when you work with blown insulation. You will need someone on the other end who can feed the blown insulation product into the blower. If you are working in an attic, make sure that you have a well-lighted, well-ventilated area to work in. The blown insulation will create large amounts of dust particles that will impede vision and breathing. Make sure that the area you are insulating is completely full; attics should be filled to above the ceiling joists, and walls should be filled to the entry hole.
