How to Replace the Battery on a 2005 GMC
- 1). Put on latex gloves and raise the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, using a battery wrench. Move the negative battery cable away from the battery, then disconnect the positive battery cable in the same manner.
- 2). Unbolt the battery hold-down hardware with the socket set. Pull the hardware up and out of the way. Depending on the specific 2005 GMC truck, the hardware may simply consist of a small plastic block holding the bottom lip of the battery to the battery tray or it may have a larger bracket assembly that goes over the top of the battery. Some GMC batteries also have a black plastic battery cover, which must be removed after you've disconnected the battery cables and then must be reinstalled before you reconnect the cables.
- 3). Lift the battery up and out of the battery tray. Set it on the ground. Compare the battery terminal locations on the old battery with those on the replacement battery.
- 4). Clean the battery cable ends with a wire brush if any signs of corrosion are evident. If there are any signs of corrosion in the battery tray, pour some baking soda on it to neutralize the battery acid.
- 5). Set the replacement battery down into the battery tray. Reinstall the battery hold-down hardware in reverse of how it was removed.
- 6). Reconnect the positive battery cable with the battery wrench. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- 7). Start the truck to make sure the battery is working properly.
