How to Change your SS Name After a Marriage
- 1). Obtain a Social Security Card application in person, by mail or online. There are exceptions as to who must fill out the application in person; the exceptions are is listed in the application's Warning section.
- 2). Gather the documents required by the Social Security Administration to prove eligibility to change the name on the card. This can include a birth certificate (to prove citizenship), government ID or passport (can be used for citizenship and identity) and marriage papers that show the new name.
- 3). Fill out the application with the name, date of birth, daytime phone and parents' identities, and sign and date it.
- 4). Mail in or submit the application in person. Applications that are mailed will take approximately seven to 14 days, according to the Social Security Administration website.
