How to Make a "V" in a Sweatshirt

  • 1). Remove the existing ribbing from around the neck of the sweatshirt. Use the seam ripper to pull out the stitches where the ribbon attaches to the sweatshirt fabric around the crew neck. Discard the ribbing or save it for another purpose.

  • 2). Place a pin at the center front of the sweatshirt along the raw edge of the neckline. Measure straight down from this center point to the point where you wish the V-neck to extend and make a mark at this point with the fabric marker. Depending on the style you desire, this may be as little as 5 inches or it may be as much 7 or 8 inches. Draw a line from the marked point up to the left and right neck edge. Cut along these lines with the scissors.

  • 3). Stitch around the entire neck edge by using the sewing machine. Position the stitching line about 3/8 inch away from the raw edges. This stay-stitching line will prevent the fabric along the neckline from stretching before you add the new ribbing. Make a tiny clip at the bottom point of the "V" with the scissors, stopping the clip just shy of the stay stitching.

  • 4). Measure the new neckline with the tape measure. Cut a piece of ribbing to sew to the neckline, making the ribbing piece about 2 inches longer than the neckline and 2 1/2 inches wide.

  • 5). Fold the ribbing in half width-wise with the wrong sides of the fabric inside and the right sides of the fabric facing out. Iron the ribbing to set the fold.

  • 6). Find the center back of the neckline and make a mark at this point with the fabric marker. Find the center point of the ribbing by folding the folded ribbing in half length-wise. Make a mark at this point with the fabric marker.

  • 7). Match the mark on the back neckline with the mark on the ribbing. Place the ribbing over the neckline of the sweatshirt, aligning the raw edges of the ribbing with the raw edge of the sweatshirt. Pin the ribbing to the sweatshirt, stretching the ribbing gently around the back of the neckline, past the shoulder seams and around to the front.

  • 8). Stitch the ribbing to the neckline using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Stop stitching 1 inch from the center of the "V" on both the left and right sides.

  • 9). Position the ribbing on the left edge of the "V" so it extends to the point and stitch the left edge. Place the ends of the ribbing inside the sweatshirt and arrange the ribbing at the "V" so that the right side overlaps the left side. Pin the ribbing to secure it and finish stitching the bottom point of the "V."

Trim the excess ribbing extending out from the bottom of the "V" if you desire.
