How to Remote Boot a Computer
- 1). Power up the PC being remote booted and press the correct "F" key (typically the "F12" key) to enter your system's boot setup menu. Select the "Advanced Power Management" option in the boot menu and press "Enter." Enable the "Power on by PCI Devices" option and exit the boot menu by pressing "OK."
- 2). Click the "Start" button and run the "Command Prompt" program on the PC being remote booted. In the text field, type "ipconfig/all" and press "Enter." Record the value in the "Physical Address" field. This is the address to which the PC sending the boot signal will connect. Power down the PC.
- 3). Install a MPU, or Magic Packet utility, program onto the computer sending the boot signal (see Resources). MPUs are programs that send a data signal through a network to a remote PC that causes the PC to boot.
- 4). Connect the signal-sending PC to the same network as the receiving PC. Run your preferred MPU program. In the dialog box, type the previously recorded "Physical Address" of the remote PC. Click the "OK" or "Send" buttons. The remote PC will now boot up.
