How to Customize Tutus
- 1). Fold tulle in half, lengthwise, twice. Pin the edge with the folds. That side will be a little over 12 inches long, and is going to be the waistband of the tutu. There are four layers of tulle: two layers with raw hems and one layer doubled-over like a large pocket.
- 2). Fill the pocket layer with the embellishments: petals, spiders, gems, sequins, etc. If you want to stitch a few onto the hemline on the outside of the skirt, be sure to leave enough for that.
- 3). Pin the open sides of the fabric, and hem them. These are the sides that run from what will be the waistband down to the bottom hem. They need to be sewn shut to keep the filling from spilling out.
- 4). Spread out the tulle. Mark the center of the waistband, and line it up with the center of the 20-inch piece of ribbon. Pin the two pieces together at that point. Fold the ends of the ribbon over the end of the tulle, and pin them into place.
- 5). Sew the tulle to the ribbon, gathering as you go to make pleats.
- 6). Spread the tulle out once again. Lay the 65-inch piece of ribbon over the 20-inch piece, lining them up in the middle. Sew the pieces of ribbon together on all sides to secure it. Cut and embellish the ends of the 65-inch ribbon, if desired.
- 7). Stitch on any remaining embellishment by hand. These pieces will look especially nice at the bottom hem of the tutu.
