What Birds Have Red Heads?
- The redheaded woodpecker lives in much of North America. The habitat ranges from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic ocean and down to Texas, the Gulf of Mexico and Florida. It lives in woods, river bottoms, orchards, parks, open country, savannas and grasslands and is partial to large old trees. The entire head, neck, throat and upper breast are brilliant red, the wings and tail are black and there are patches of white on the rear of the wings. Males and females are alike. They nest in cavities that they excavate with their beaks in trees, utility poles, eaves, or fence posts.
- The scarlet tanager is a 6 1/2 inch long songbird that lives in the forests from southern Canada to the east coast of Mexico and into Bolivia. The male has a red head and body with black wings and tail, the female is duller. The scarlet tanager eats insects and fruit and its nest is a shallow cup in a tree.

The Andean cock-of-the-rock lives in the forests of the Andes. The male has a red head, shoulder and a red circular crest on top of its head. During noisy courtship rituals that take place in special areas called leks, the bird can extend the crest till it completely covers its bill and the shape of its eyes change from round to oval. But after mating, the female takes on the duties of nesting and parenthood alone. The red-crested cardinal is a 7 1/2 inch-long bird that lives in eastern Bolivia and down to northern Argentina. There's an introduced population in Hawaii. It not only has a red head but an expressive red crest. The red-crested cardinal lives in grassland near water, where it feeds in small groups on seeds that have fallen to the ground. - The scarlet macaw is a brilliantly colored bird of central South America. At around 34 inches long, it has a red head, a long tapering red tail, and body and wing feathers of gold, blue and green. It's monogamous and flocks of macaws comprises pairs of birds. It eats fruits, nuts and seeds. The sexes are colored alike. The eastern Rosella is a 12 inch long parrot with colorful plumage as well as a red head. It lives in southeastern Australia and eats fruit, blossoms, nectar from trees and seeds from the ground. As it will take fruit from orchards, it is considered a pest.
