How to Make a Plastic Bottle Bird Feeder
- 1). Clean a 2-liter plastic soda bottle out thoroughly with dish soap and water. Let it completely air-dry before using it.
- 2). Cut a piece of cork to fit snuggly inside the soda bottle. You can trim it down to fit with a utility knife. This is a step that should be performed by an adult.
- 3). Drill several holes all the way around the bottle. This is also a step that must be performed by an adult.
- 4). Gather together some sticks that are long enough to go through the bottle, using the holes, and give a bird enough room to land comfortably on each side.
- 5). Slide some sticks through one of the holes on one side and out a hole on the other side. 3 sticks should be enough and make them at different heights on the bottle.
- 6). Fill the bottle with bird seed and put the cork in the hole at the top. Make sure it is in tightly so that it doesn't fall when you hang it up.
- 7). Buy a screw with a hook on the end at your local hardware store, and screw it in to the cork. Tie a strong string or thin rope to the hook and tie it around a tree branch. Make sure it is secure so that no birds land on the bird feeder and make the whole thing come tumbling down. Give it a few good tugs to make sure it is safe.
- 8). Wait from a distance for the birds to come and have your field guide out, so you can identify them.
