    • 1). Make sure to park the Subaru Outback on a level surface and set the parking brake.

    • 2). Open the hood to check the external temperature of the radiator. Be sure to prop the hood open securely before putting your hands and arms into the engine compartment. If the radiator is warm, allow the radiator to cool down before you proceed.

    • 3). Start removing the radiator cap with one full turn, step back to allow the pressure to release and then remove the cap completely. You need to step back and pause because the internal pressure can cause the radiator to erupt and burn anyone in the area.

    • 4). Position a 2-gallon bucket or tray beneath the radiator and below the drain plug. The drain plug on a Subaru Outback is usually on the lower passenger side on the backside of the radiator.

    • 5). Open the drain plug and allow the coolant to flow completely out of the radiator. Once done, pour the old coolant into a sealable container for proper disposal later. Be very careful with the old coolant as it is very toxic to people and pets.

    • 6). Close the drain plug on the radiator and fill it with distilled water. Next, open the drain plug and let the water flow into the bucket. Keep replicating this procedure until the water runs debris free out of the bottom of the radiator. Dispose of the radiator flush upon completion and close the drain plug again.

    • 7). Fill the radiator with fresh coolant. Double check the radiator plug to ensure there are no leaks. You want to fill the radiator to within an inch of overflowing. It takes approximately 2 gallons to fill the radiator in a Subaru Outback.

    • 8). Turn the engine on and set the heater to the high setting. Allow the Subaru Outback to run until the cooling fan turns on twice. Switch the engine off and check the coolant level. If it is lower than required, add more coolant. If not, replace the radiator cap and close the hood.
