How to Back Up Your Boat Trailer
- 1). Straighten out your trailer and adjust your side-view mirrors so you can see the trailer in each of the mirrors.
- 2). Approach the boat ramp to give yourself the straightest possible descent toward the water.
- 3). Switch your vehicle into reverse and slowly back up toward the ramp.
Keep your hands on the bottom of your steering wheel. With your hands here, you can turn the wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go.
Understand that the trailer will go in the opposite direction of how you turn the wheel if you place your hands on the top of the wheel. So if you want to turn left, you need to turn the wheel to the right. If you want to turn right, you need to turn the wheel to the left. - 4). If you need to turn, pick a spot on the ground about 3 feet to 5 feet back from the trailer's wheels and slowly drive toward that spot. When you hit the spot, stop and choose a new target spot. Continue to do this until you have the correct angle, and then straighten out your vehicle and trailer to launch your boat.
- 5). Back up very slowly, adjusting the steering wheel as needed. Continually check your mirrors to make sure you can see the trailer from each side. If your mirrors are adjusted correctly, you will be able to drive straight back without issue.
