How to Paint Plastic Car Lights
- 1). Wash your car thoroughly with soap and water, then wash it with a grease and wax remover. Attach a wire from the chassis of the car to anything nearby that is grounded to prevent dust from being attracted back to the car. Remove or tape off any headlight rain-wipers or other accessories to prevent them from being painted.
- 2). Sand the plastic lightly--this will help the primer grab the surface of the plastic. Cover all the areas you do not want painted, using a tarp or paper, and tape this down with masking tape.
- 3). Apply primer to the areas you want painted. Sand out the primer to smooth it out; be careful not to sand down to the plastic layer.
- 4). Fill a paint spray gun full of a urethane-based car paint of your chosen color. Spray a coat of paint over the designated area. Allow it to dry for up to 15 minutes. Apply another coat, if needed, and allow it to dry.
- 5). Apply a clear coat. Allow it to dry for about 15 minutes. Apply two more coats and let the car dry for 90 minutes. Remove the tarp and masking that protected the other surfaces of the car.
