How to Weave With Jute
- 1). Run the lengths of jute webbing down the sides of your form and secure the ends with pins. The "form" is the skeleton, like a solid box, which provides the structure for your final piece. The ribbons of jute should be snugly side-by-side and kept slightly loose.
- 2). Weave more lengths of jute perpendicular to the first set, running them through in an under-over-under pattern as you go. Secure these pieces with pins at each end.
- 3). Pull the slack out of each length of jute webbing so that it's around the form then re-pin them.
- 4). Glue the ends of the horizontal webbing in the places where they are running behind the vertical strands. Allow enough time for the glue to dry.
- 5). Trim the ends of the jute so that they hide behind the horizontal pieces.
- 6). Look for areas where the jute webbing puckers and secure these pieces flat by gluing each section to the piece behind it.
- 7). Use a foam brush to apply an even layer of fabric stiffener to the entire outside of the woven jute. This will help keep its shape. Allow the fabric stiffener to dry completely, which should take about three hours.
