Uses for Ordinary Household Objects

    Bleach Bottles

    • Empty plastic bleach bottles make great disposable paint buckets because of their sturdy handles. Clean the bottle thoroughly to remove bleach residue. Replace the cap when the bottle is clean and dry. Cut a large hole in the side of the bottle opposite the handle. The hole should be shaped like a half-circle with the curved side upward, beginning about 4 inches below the cap and ending 3-4 inches above the bottom of the bottle. Make the hole about 6 inches across (large enough to allow easy access for a paintbrush). Don't cut past the vertical center of the bottle or the handle will lose its stability.

For a smaller paint job, cut off the top of the bleach bottle about 1 inch below the handle. When turned upside down, the top serves as a makeshift funnel perfect for holding a small amount of paint. To drain, just unscrew the cap.

    Felt Floor Protectors

Adhesive felt floor protectors are often used on the bottoms of chair legs to protect floors from scrapes and scratches, but they can also keep clothes on their hangers. Attach two small discs to the "shoulders" of a plastic or wooden hanger to keep clothing with thin straps or silky fabric from winding up on the floor of the closet.

    Cardboard Six-Pack Carrier

    • A cardboard drink carrier from a six-pack of soda or beer makes outdoor dining easier when it doubles as a condiment kit. Load the compartments with squeeze-bottle condiments, salt and pepper, napkins and disposable cutlery.

    Dryer Sheets

    • Dryer sheets make laundry soft, but they can also make kitchen clean-up easier. To remove burned food from a roasting pan, fill the pan with hot water and place a fresh dryer sheet inside. Let it soak for 15 minutes or longer, and the stuck-on food will come off a lot easier.

To eliminate static cling on a dress you're already wearing, run a damp used dryer sheet over your hosiery.

    Turkey Baster

    • Change the water in an arrangement without disturbing the flowers by using a turkey baster to draw out the dirty water and replace it. A turkey baster is also perfect for watering plants with dense foliage because the tip goes all the way into the plant before any water is released.

    Shower Hooks

    • Purses can be difficult to keep organized, and they often get crushed and misshapen from being stored improperly. Protect handbags and keep them within easy reach by hanging them from a clothing rail on S-shaped shower hooks.
