Simple Housekeeping Tips
- You don't need to disinfect every room in your house from top to bottom on a weekly basis. The rooms that you should concern yourself with the most for regular disinfecting are the kitchen and bathrooms. High traffic rooms are next in line for cleaning when you can after the kitchen and bathrooms are done. For rooms that see little or no use, forget about them and close the door until you have some time to devote to them.
- Take some time to find a place to store all items in your house and throw out or donate things you don't need. Having a place for everything reduces the chances of piles of stuff building up on any surface or floor space.
Also, organize cleaning supplies by keeping supplies close to where they're used. The easier these are to access, the more likely you are to clean when you don't have to spend the effort to get to what you need. - Planning out and maintaining a few daily chores will help minimize buildup of dirt and clutter. These chores should be based on the things you do every day. When you wake up, make your bed. After you eat, clean the dishes, counters, the table, and put food away. Take shoes off when you enter the house so you don't drag dirt throughout the house. Pick up small clutter and put things in their place before going to bed. When you go to bed, put away the clothes you wore whether in the hamper, drawer or back on a hanger.
- Design a cleaning schedule that works best for you. If you can, set aside one day each week to clean. If you don't have a day to set aside, try a daily schedule and fit in a little cleaning of a different room or chore each day. Don't hesitate to do something monthly, such as cleaning the first day of the month and then squeeze in little tasks here and there as needed the remainder of the month.
- Buy a book on household cleaning and maintenance to have handy for reference. These books specialize in techniques for removing stains, cleaning tips and basic home repair instructions. Keeping one in your house will give you a quick point of reference when you tackle an odd job and you won't have to waste any more of your time searching elsewhere for a solution.
