Chelation Rust Removal
- 1). Place the rusted metal object into a container large enough to submerge the object completely. For example, smaller objects will fit into a 5-gallon bucket while somewhat larger objects might require a wheel barrel.
- 2). Fill the container until the metal object is completely submerged. Use a ratio of five parts water to one part molasses.
- 3). Place a submersible heater into the molasses or choose a separate method for heating the fluids. Bring the fluid to a temperature that allows the molasses to flow and not just sink to the bottom of the container.
- 4). Remove the metal object after two days, then scrub it with hose water and a wire brush to knock off loose rust.
- 5). Place the object back onto the container for two more days, then repeat the process until all of the rust is removed.
