How to Cover Wires on a Lampshade
- 1). Trace the edges of your wire frame over sheets of adhesive styrene to outline the foundation for your lampshade. For square- or rectangle-shaped wire shades, you will need to trace each side separately. For a round or cone shape, you will need to roll the wire frame along the paper while tracing to create an arch shade shape.
- 2). Cut the traced pieces out with scissors.
- 3). Remove the styrene backing and smooth the adhesive surface to the back side of your desired fabric. Take care to smooth out any bubbles.
- 4). Cut away excess fabric so that the fabric borders lines up flush with the edges of the styrene.
- 5). Attach the styrene backed fabric to the wired frame with glue and hold the pieces in place with clothes pins until they are dry. The styrene should be facing inside the shade and the fabric should be facing outward.
- 1). Measure the length from the top of the outer edge of the lampshade frame to the bottom outer edge of the frame to determine how long your bead strands need to be. For square- and rectangle-shaped lamps, you will need to measure each section separately. For round- and cone-shaped lamps, you will only need one measurement.
- 2). String the glass beads onto a piece of monofilament about 6 inches longer than your shade measurement. The extra 3 inches on each end will allow you enough slack to attach your strand to the wire frame.
- 3). Attach a piece of tape to each end of your beaded strand upon completion, allowing for 3 inches of slack on each end to keep the beads from sliding off.
- 4). Knot one end of the string to the top of the wire frame, removing your tape carefully as you work. Knot the remaining end to the opposing bottom of the wire frame, removing your tape carefully as you work.
- 5). Repeat Step 4 until your lampshade is covered with bead strands.
