If you have any pets, it's inevitable they will have an accident and soil the carpet or rug. If not removed as soon as possible, pet urine and feces can leave behind stains and unwanted odors that can be hard to get rid of. If your pet has an accident, clean it up and treat the area to keep the stain from setting and the smell from worsening.

    Vinegar and Water

    • In a spray bottle, combine equal amount of warm water and white vinegar. Lightly spray the mixture directly on the stain. Let the stain sit and then blot it up with a towel or rag. For more stubborn stains, work the vinegar and water mixture into the carpet using a carpet or cleaning brush. The vinegar helps to cut through the stain and neutralize odor. This mixture works on both old and fresh stains cat and dog urine stains. Sprinkle the area with baking soda to deodorize and vacuum it up in a couple hours. If the smell persists, add a small amount of water to the baking soda to make it a paste. Work it into the carpet, and let it sit overnight, and then, using a wet cloth, dab it clean.

    Dish Soap and Water

    • For a fresh dog urine stain, blot up any remaining dog urine. In a bucket, mix one teaspoon dish washing soap with one cup of water as hot as you can tolerate. Dip a clean towel or rag in the mixture and dab at the stain. When complete, blot the area with fresh water and blot up any remaining water. Sprinkle the area with baking soda to deodorize and vacuum in a couple hours.

    Dish Soap and Stain Remover

    • This method removes feces stains remaining on the carpet. After removing all of the accident, mix dish soap with warm water in a bucket. Scrub the stain with the mixture using a cloth or carpet brush, then spray the area with a carpet stain removing spray or a laundry stain remover. Let the stain remover sit five to 10 minutes, and then scrub the stain. Repeat using the stain remover until the stain is no longer visible. Once the stain is removed, use a clean cloth to dab the area with plain water, and a dry cloth to dab the area dry.
