How to Adjust the Timing in a VW Passat
- 1). Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature by allowing the cooling fan to cycle on and off once. Turn off any accessories like the radio, lights and climate control.
- 2). Turn the engine off and connect the timing light to the battery if necessary and then to the number one ignition wire at the far right of the engine. Locate the crankshaft pulley at the bottom front of the engine and clean away and dirt or grime to expose the timing marks.
- 3). Restart the engine and allow it to idle for one minute. Point the timing gun at the crankshaft pulley and determine the amount of adjustment required.
- 4). Shut the engine off and loosen the distributor hold down bolts just enough the distributor can be turned. Turn the distributor slowly to the desired position and tighten the distributor hold down bolts. Recheck the timing and repeat the process until the crankshaft timing mark lines up with the middle line of the timing light.
- 5). Place the ignition in the "Off" position and remove the timing light. Replace the number one ignition wire.
