How to Pull More Bandwidth

104 31

    XP Professional

    • 1). Click on "Start" and then "Run" to launch the run command box. Type in "gpedit.msc" in the text-box and hit "Enter." A pop-up window will appear.

    • 2). Expand the branch labeled "Administrative Templates" under "Local Computer Policy." Locate the "Network" label and expand to view options.

    • 3). Locate the label "QoS Packet Scheduler" on the left portion of the Window and highlight it. Double-click on the setting labeled "Limit Reservable Bandwidth" and put a check mark on "Enabled" by clicking on the text. Change the value in "Bandwidth Limit %" to "0" (zero).

    • 4). Close "gpedit.msc" and restart the computer. This tweak releases up to 20 percent of unused bandwidth; download a small file to compare bandwidth before and after freeing up the locked bandwidth.

    Vista

    • 1). Click on the Windows logo from desktop and type in "regedit" in the "Start Search" text-box. A pop-up window will appear with the heading "Registry Editor."

    • 2). Expand "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" on the left pane of the window by clicking on the item. Scroll down to "Software" and expand the item. Locate "Microsoft" under "Software" to expand it, and then select "Windows." Navigate to "Current Version" and then "Internet Settings."

    • 3). Right-click on a vacant area on the right pane of the "Registry Editor" interface. Select "New" from the shortcut menu, and click on "DWORD (32-bit) Value." A new registry key will be generated at the bottom of the list.

    • 4). Right-click on the newly-created key and select "Rename." Type in "MaxConnectionsPerServer" for the new DWORD key name.

    • 5). Right-click on the MaxConnectionsPerServer entry, and click on "Modify." A dialog box will appear with the heading "Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value." Click on the "Decimal" radio button, and type in any number greater than "2" in the "Value Data" text-box. Any number you type in this box will be the new limit of how many files your web browser can simultaneously download from a web server. You may put "10" or "15" in the text-box.

    • 6). Create another entry by following Step 3 and label it "MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server." You do not have to edit any options for this registry key. Save changes by closing "Registry Editor." This tweak will enable your computer to load graphics-intensive web pages faster, by allowing it to download more files at the same time.
