    • 1). Run the Vista Performance scan. This program will examine your computer to get a score of zero to 5.9 on the Windows Experience Index. A score of 3.0 and up means the computer is operating as it should. A lower score means there may be issues. Find the Vista Performance tool in Control Panel under System Maintenance and then Performance Information and Tools.

    • 2). Run the Check Disk Utility. Find it in the Control Panel under System Maintenance, then Administrative Tools. Click "Free Up Disk Space." Click the appropriate scan for the entire system. Give Vista permission to continue and highlight drive C. Click OK in the next screen after ensuring that all boxes are checked. This will get rid of unnecessary and unwanted materials.

    • 3). Disable the startup items that you do not need. Go to the Control Panel. Under Programs, click "Change Startup Programs." Windows Defender will allow you to disable the programs that you do not need. Just highlight the program and click disable.

    • 4). Clear out the Internet cache. Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools and then Internet Tools. Under the General tab, go to Browsing History. Click Delete. Check Temporary Internet Files and Cookies. You can also choose to clear the other areas as well. Click Delete and wait for the utility to run.

    • 5). Get rid of unused and unwanted programs. Go to Control Panel, Programs, then Uninstall A Program. Look to the right of the box to see how often you use a program and how much spaces it takes up. This is a great time to decide which programs must be removed in order to save space.

    • 6). Run a virus, spyware and adware scan. Sometimes, these programs can inhabit your computer and slow down the performance. Windows Defender can remove them, but also use an independent but updated scanning program.

    • 7). Adjust your laptop's energy and performance balance. Go into the Control Panel. In a laptop, look for Mobile PC. Click "Change Battery Settings." Adjust the settings so that the power and performance are at least equal.

    • 8). Defragment the computer. This process groups loosely stored information into one area. It actually frees up memory that could not be used because of improperly stored data.
